Downtown Macon’s skyline is about to welcome back a beloved piece of history.
On Wednesday, December 17 at 6:00 p.m., representatives from H2 Capital, The Sign Store, Piedmont Construction Group, and NewTown Macon hosted a press conference and public sign-lighting ceremony celebrating the installation of the original Joseph N. Neel’s Department Store sign at the Neel’s Lofts development, located at 462 Cherry Street in Downtown Macon.
For generations, the Neel’s Department Store stood as a downtown landmark and community gathering point. Now, as the former site is reimagined through Neel’s Lofts, the project team is ensuring the past remains visible in the city’s future. The restored sign, which once hung on the building for more than a century, now serves as one of the most meaningful historic elements incorporated into the new construction.
During the press conference, project representatives shared the story behind preserving and refabricating the sign, along with updates on the progress of Neel’s Lofts.
Neel’s Lofts is a 95-unit luxury loft project that will also include a coworking space, two retail spaces, and a restaurant space, helping bring additional energy, amenities, and opportunities to the Downtown Macon experience. Following the 6:00 p.m. sign lighting, attendees were invited to tour the model unit and learn more about leasing opportunities.
