Piedmont Macon Medical Center matched with 28 resident physicians on
Match Day, the much-anticipated day when residents across the country learn the name of the residency program where they will train for the next several years.
The new residents are expected to join Piedmont Macon on July 1 in three residency programs – Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year. Match Week culminated Friday, March 20, with Match Day when anxious residents learned the next step of their career.
“Match Day is always one of the most meaningful days, because it represents years of hard work, dedication and perseverance for these 28 talented physicians who have matched with us this year,” said Jonathan Smith, M.D., the Designated Institutional Official for the Graduate Medical Education program at Piedmont Macon. “We’re excited to welcome these exceptional new residents to Piedmont Macon Medical Center later this summer, and we look forward to the lasting impressions they will make on our hospital and our community.”
The Piedmont Macon residency program offers tracks of one to four years and has increased the number of doctors who serve Macon and the state of Georgia by retaining many of the residents who complete their medical training here.
Of this year’s incoming residents, 12 are from Georgia, including two from Macon and one from Warner Robins.
Although Piedmont Macon is a large 310-bed hospital, residents are given the opportunity to receive one-on-one time with attending physicians and specialty coordinators. Piedmont Macon’s attending physicians typically take just one resident per rotation, giving those residents a good foundation and opportunity to grow in their field of study. Piedmont Macon also has a full-time scholarly activity coordinator who works individually with residents on research and publication projects.
