After a year of collaboration, listening, and shared work across Central Georgia, the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative (ONPPI) has released the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Corridor Strategic Plan.
This milestone reflects more than progress toward national park designation for Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. It represents a growing regional alignment around what comes next and how we prepare our communities to meet that opportunity with intention.
Released on Earth Day, the plan is a clear example of stewardship in action. It shows what is possible when communities come together to protect a place of deep cultural and natural significance while also planning for thoughtful growth, access, and long-term economic impact.
This work builds on nearly 100 years of grassroots momentum. Over the past year, ONPPI has engaged voices from across the region, gathering input from community members, local leaders, and partners who are invested in the future of Central Georgia. The result is a plan grounded in both conservation and community, one that reflects the shared belief that preservation and progress can move forward together.
With the plan now complete, the focus turns to implementation. Local governments and regional partners are encouraged to use it as a guide for decision-making, coordinated investment, and shared priorities to shape the future of this corridor and the communities connected to it.
This is part of a broader moment for Macon and Central Georgia. The momentum we are experiencing is not accidental. It is the result of sustained collaboration, strategic investment, and a shared commitment to building a stronger region. The Ocmulgee Corridor Strategic Plan is a meaningful step forward in that work, positioning our community to benefit from one of the most significant opportunities in our region’s history.
