When Amy Gitschlag moved to Macon as a 22-year-old teacher recruit in 2001, she arrived alone with a cat and a fresh degree from the University of Tennessee.
Her first year, she said, was full of “rough moments” and “ups and downs.” But one person, the head custodian at Minnie Burghard Elementary School, saw something in her.
“He told me, ‘You’re a good teacher. One day we’re going to see you recognized as the teacher of the year,’” Gitschlag told The Telegraph. “That memory has really been resonating with me.” More than two decades later, the prediction came true. Gitschlag, now starting her 26th year in the Bibb County School District and 11th year at Southwest High School, was named the 2026-2027 Bibb County Teacher of the Year on Thursday. “I just try to do my best work and support my students, and it’s just so awesome to be recognized on that level for doing that,” the English teacher said.
