King of Soul Festival in Macon celebrating the legacy of Otis Redding

Macon knows how to put on a festival. Throughout the year, these gatherings bring people downtown, showcase the creativity of our community and give visitors another reason to spend time here. Each adds something different to the mix, helping make Macon-Bibb a more interesting place to live, work and do business.

On September 11–12, 2026, the 5th Annual King of Soul Festival in Macon will add its own unmistakably local sound to that lineup with a weekend honoring the music, influence and lasting legacy of Otis Redding.

Fans, artists and residents will gather in the city Otis called home. For the Greater Macon Chamber and the Investors we serve, the weekend also offers a good example of what can happen when culture, tourism and local business come together.

How Festival Visitors Support Macon-Bibb Businesses

A concert ticket may be what brings someone to Macon, but it is rarely the only thing they purchase while they are here.

Visitors book hotel rooms, stop for dinner, browse local shops and discover attractions they may not have known about before arriving. They rely on transportation providers, hospitality workers, production crews, vendors and creative professionals. Before long, one night out has touched businesses across the community.

Those dollars help support local jobs and generate tax revenue for the services, amenities and infrastructure residents and businesses use throughout the year. The benefit is not limited to the businesses closest to the festival venue, either. A recommendation from a hotel employee, shop owner or Macon resident can send a visitor to another part of the city for breakfast, shopping or one more stop before heading home.

And sometimes, visitors do not simply head home and forget us. A good weekend can become a return trip, a recommendation to a friend or the beginning of a different way of seeing Macon. Today’s festival guest could eventually become tomorrow’s employee, resident, client or investor.

Arts and Culture Help Make Macon More Livable

Employers know that recruiting someone to Macon-Bibb involves more than introducing them to a job. Candidates also want to know what they can do after work, where they might take visiting family and whether the community feels like a place where they could belong.

Music, arts, food and cultural experiences help answer those questions in a way a relocation packet alone cannot.

Festivals are one part of that story. Together with Macon’s museums, venues, restaurants, neighborhoods and year-round cultural programs, they create the texture of daily life here. They give current residents more reasons to stay and employers more to share with people who may still be getting to know the community.

That is why the King of Soul Festival has relevance beyond its two-day schedule. Otis Redding’s connection to Macon is recognized around the world, and the festival welcomes that wider audience into the community that helped shape his story. It is a point of pride, certainly, but it is also an introduction to Macon.

The Celebration Continues Through the Next Generation

The festival’s impact does not end with the final performance. Proceeds support youth music and arts programs through the Otis Redding Foundation and the Otis Redding Center for the Arts.

Through these programs, young people have opportunities to explore their creativity, build confidence and develop their abilities. They also get to learn within the legacy of an artist whose work continues to carry Macon’s name around the world.

For our business community, that investment has lasting value. The skills young people build through the arts, including collaboration, discipline, communication and creative thinking, travel with them into classrooms, workplaces and leadership roles. Just as importantly, these programs give young people a chance to imagine what they might contribute to their own community.

Plan Your King of Soul Festival Weekend

This year’s festival weekend includes two signature experiences in Downtown Macon:

  • The Big “O” Homecoming Show & Dance on Friday, September 11, at the Capitol Theatre
  • An Evening of Respect on Saturday, September 12, at the Macon City Auditorium, featuring CeeLo Green, Eric Burton, Lamont Landers and more

Greater Macon Chamber Investors and businesses throughout Macon-Bibb can help make the most of the weekend. Attend a performance, invite a client, share the schedule with employees or point a visitor toward a locally owned restaurant, shop or attraction.

Supporting a festival does not always require a sponsorship or a place on the program. Sometimes it is as simple as helping a guest find a good meal after the show. Those everyday recommendations help more of the weekend’s activity reach businesses throughout Macon-Bibb while giving visitors a warmer, fuller experience of the city.

The King of Soul Festival is one part of Macon’s lively festival landscape and one more reason for people to experience our community. It brings visitors downtown, supports local spending and creates opportunities for young people through music and the arts.

For the Chamber and the business community we serve, that is plenty of reason to join the celebration, even before the first note is played.
